Tribes is an outstanding way to build community...I also believe that every teacher needs to take some time right away to teach the kids about multiple intelligences and how every kid is smart...MI classrooms prove to be more respectful and cooperative as everyone knows everyone else's strength's...They know who the best artist and will ask for them when they need an artist,etc...and Patty, the reason the students you have do better in alternative activities is because 95% of the kids we label at risk are bodily Kinesthetic(sp)...There is a great simulation that Interact has called"Teamwork" that gets kids in groups over a period of days and each day there is an activity that teaches them some form of cooperative learning from conflict resolution, to communication...I think there are 6 different things they incorporate...I am going to adapt it the first few days of my freshman history class at the University this fall...If you can teach these skills at your levels, life gets easier for everyone as these kids go up the ladder...Thanks for your insights

Hi Laurie and Dianne...I have some materials to teach MI to all kids and I would recommend Thomas Armstrongs book "Multiple Intelligences In the Classroom"..very practical systematic and has a lot of ideas on how to incorporate MI in all subjects...Also Jane Maki a 1st grade teacher in Osceola school district and her cohorts put together a unit on MI and have a survey for kids that age...i have copy of it and can send it to you...let me know
